promising magic presents after one is dead is a very convenient thing to do. No need to ever have to show this is true. That we have no evidence for this god or its son/self, there is no reason to believe in it. We also have the problem that in the bible, this god says it causes evil as well as good, but most Christians try to ignore that part. Its working with its supposed evil archenemy also makes it rather hard to believe that this entity is good in any sense.

I’ve always loved this quote by Philip Yancy about suffering. “Virtually every passage on suffering in the New Testament deflects the emphasis from cause to response. Although we cannot grasp the master plan of the universe, which allows for so much evil and pain (the Why? question), we can nevertheless respond in two important ways. First, we can find meaning in the midst of suffering. Second, we can offer real and practical help to those in need.”
